5 Ways to Wear Yellow This Season

Summer is the season in which some of us reach our full fashion potential. We get to go all out with bold colors, mix & match prints, and not to mention, wear pieces that show off our amazing figures that we worked on throughout the colder months. At Detroit Fashion News, we’re strong advocates for taking risks when it comes to style, which is why we’re here to tell you how you can look radiant in yellow this summer.

Yellow?

Yes, yellow. We know it probably sounds like a bit much to those of you that swear that black is a primary color, but trust us — these outfits are sure to have you looking like the most fashionable lady in the room.

Yellow Outfit 1

A yellow lace skirt would be perfect for an afternoon date! Paired with an off the shoulder top and strappy sandals, your beau’s eyes will be glued to you.

(River’s Island Skirt, $70; Topshop Blouse, $80; GoJane Faux Suede Heels, $40; Dolce & Gabbana Handbag, $3,241; Isabel Marant Bracelet, $70)

Yellow Outfit 2

If you’re not quite ready to embrace wearing such a bright color, take baby steps! An all white outfit with yellow shoes and accessories would be a nice way to ease yourself into the change.

(BCBG Max Azria Crop Top, $119; Sleeveless Waistcoat, $28; Satin Culottes, $352; Steve Madden Sandals, $90; Henri Bendel Handbag, $455)

Yellow Outfit 3

Lemonade, anyone? This Dolce & Gabbana printed dress would be all the rage at country club picnics and other summer events. Plus, Beyoncé’s daughter Blue Ivy was spotted wearing a mini version of it on Instagram!

(Dolce & Gabbana Dress, $2,864; Michael Kors Sandals, $95; Clutch, $35; Faux Pearl Necklace, $50; Earrings, $9)

Yellow Outfit 4

Trade in your denim shorts for a pair of high-rise yellow ones! A lace crop top and fancy flats would be adorable for brunch with your family, a day at the mall or even an impromptu girls’ night out. If you want to make the look more casual, swap the crop top out for a simple v-neck, throw on a denim jacket, and voila! You’ll look instantly cool.

(Alice + Olivia Crop Top, $132; High-Rise Shorts, $117; Lace-Up Flats, $42; Coach Handbag, $287; Kate Spade Watch, $195)

Yellow Outfit 5

Want to spice up your work wardrobe? An all-yellow ensemble will earn you the title as “Best Dressed” in the office, for sure! If you want to mellow the outfit down a bit, you can throw on a neutral colored blazer and heels.

(Textured Top, $18; Rivers Island Wide Leg Pants, $64; ALDO Sandals, $80; Michael Kors Handbag, $298; Chloe + Isabel Statement Necklace, $138)

Madonna Wears Lydia Courteille and Le Vian at the 2016 Billboard Music Awards

MadonnaSo many of you probably heard about Madonna’s tribute to Prince at the 2016 Billboard Music Awards at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas yesterday. Aside from the amazing performance, the killer songs we all love and her gorgeous presence, we were in awe of her complete outfit from head to toe including her sparkling accessories. Madonna wore Lydia Courteille diamond earrings and ring and stunning Le Vian diamond rings.

Lydia Courteille is a Paris-based designer inspired by the beauty behind the Mexican gardens of Xochimilico and the Amazon jungle. A certified gemologist, she sources the finest precious stones and transforms them into fantastical adornments that have earned her star-studded clientele like Madonna herself.

Le Vian’s® designs are regarded as works of art and it’s obvious when the diamond rings are seen on Madonna. Artisans craft rare natural fancy color diamonds including Pink Orchid Diamonds™, Sunny Yellow Diamonds™, Blackberry Diamonds™, Vanilla Diamonds™ and Chocolate Diamonds® into innovative designs, combining colors of gems and flavors of gold with intricate detailing and a passion from days gone by. Master gem cutters then utilize Le Vian®’s proprietary and innovative cuts to brilliantly reveal the exceptional beauty of each gem.
Madonna certainly isn’t known for being shy and cheaping out.  Her impeccable taste and luxurious choices in Madonnatravel, fashion and jewelry keep us on the edge of our seats each time she makes an appearance.  Given the exquisite designs and impressive background of both Le Vian and Lydia Courteille, it’s no surprise she’s supporting these great designers.

The Fashion Massacre 7

Cheryl ZemkeThe Fashion Massacre is not your average fashion show. The annual event, which shines light on local designers through a series of innovative fashion presentations, celebrated its seventh year with a weekend full of art and creativity.

Seeing as how seven is considered a lucky number amongst many, Fashion Massacre guests were definitely in for a treat this year. In the past, the Fashion Massacre was a one-day presentation, typically held at an art gallery. This time around, the event lasted from Friday, May 6 to Sunday, May 8, at a different location each night.

Fashion Massacre Producer Tyna “Fance” Logan has been the genius behind each and every show. Logan’s previous experience within the realm of fashion, as well as her creativity, were two of the main forces that drove her to take the entrepreneurial leap almost a decade ago.

“I went to numerous fashion events [in Detroit] seven years ago, and I felt like there was something missing within these events,” Logan said. “I traveled to New York Fashion Week, and when I went there, I was moved. I was wowed by the creativity, the professionalism, the art — everything was just amazing to me. So I started the Fashion Massacre…to shine light on an industry that I felt was missing the creative approach to things.”

Like with any successful project, the Massacre has improved each year since its debut. In order to keep up with the ever-changing ways of the fashion industry, Logan said that every detail, from music to hair and makeup, mattered. She wanted each supporter to see and feel all of the hard work that went into planning the event.

“Eventually I want [the Fashion Massacre] to be like Fashion Week; I want it to be seven days,” Logan said. “So I’m kind of taking my baby steps until that seven-day mark.”

Out of StockEach night of the Massacre had a different theme, and in order to embody the visions that Logan was going for, she knew that she had to find the perfect locations.

The opening night of this year’s Massacre was entitled “Forest,” and was held at the DNR Adventure Center in downtown Detroit from 8-10 p.m.

“I think I was on the River Walk or just randomly driving, and I said, ‘Wow, I definitely want to go in this place and see what it looks like inside,’” Logan recalled of the event space. “When I went [inside], I immediately knew it was a Massacre location. It’s just a feeling you have.”

As ethereal music played, models walked out into the woodland-esque space, complete with an indoor waterfall. Guests were encouraged to interact with the garments, and to, of course, document their experiences on social media using the hashtag #FashionMassacre7.

The second night, held inside of Detroit’s Electric Studio, was given the name “Orchestra.” The white and black décor of the venue served as a blank slate for designers, as some of them incorporated visuals, props and even machine-made fog into their presentations. Exhilarating string music was heard throughout the night to accomplish the classical vibe that Logan was going for.

Evann Webb and Tyna Fancy LoganThe third and final night was called “Gymnasium.” Models did their best catwalks across the floor of the gym inside of the YMCA of Metropolitan Detroit while sporting trendy athletic and casual wear. The runway show was a change of pace from the previous two nights, and was a solid conclusion to the event as a whole.

With participation from 21 designers and 70 models, and the support of hundreds of guests, the Fashion Massacre 7 proved itself to be a success.

Michigan State University junior and first-time Fashion Massacre model Mia Elzy said that her experience brought out a newfound confidence in herself.

“It was very exciting to model for the Fashion Massacre 7,” Elzy said. “Just being around so many people involved in fashion and feeding off their energy really motivated me.”

Now that Logan has seven Massacres under her belt, there’s no telling what she’ll do next. But no matter how creative she decides to get with her next event, she will always make the effort to stay true to her original objective.

House of Armelle“My prayer is that I touch the culture in a way where they look at the Massacre in a light of fashion as they would look at the Auto Show,” Logan said. “So, each year, my plan is…just really creating this culture of professionalism in the next level of fashion and the way it’s supposed to be presented.”

UglyFly Republic: Soft Spirits and Wild Hearts

Ugly Fly RepublicWhen we hear about people following their dreams and letting their talents lead them into success, we get all fuzzy and warm inside. As a soft spirit, Monai created Ugly Fly Republic with two goals in mind; one, reflect the free-spirited flow of her very Being and two, to go beyond what the everyday person dreams is attainable. In a world of fads and trends, Ugly Fly Republic aims to break the standards in fashion and stereotypes. An, emerging street artist and creator of Ugly Fly Republic Monai Alexis has finally graced us with her talents in the fashion world and has taken a break from canvases to display her art on clothing.

The Ugly Fly brand is for the eccentric art appreciator.  It’s for the risk-takers we all secretly admire, who live outside the box and the lovers of fashion who aim to eliminate the borders associated with clothing. Seen on widely-known artists such as Young Thug and Mack Maine of Young Money, Ugly Fly Republic is spreading their mantra of individuality. Very quickly.

Ugly Fly RepublicMonai has included jeans, shirts, dresses, sweaters and outerwear to the UglyFly Republic brand. Each piece is hand-made and carefully constructed as UglyFly Republic believes and stands for true quality over quantity.

For more information and to learn more about the brand, click here to check out their website and shop UglyFly!

The 2016 Michigan Fashion Summit

Fashion SummitAs someone that wants to begin her fashion industry career in Detroit, I was beyond ecstatic when I heard that Michigan Fashion Week was hosting its first Fashion Summit this April. So excited, that I even applied to be an intern to help plan and promote the event.

Of course, I did some research on the Summit so that I could have some background information on exactly what it was, just in case I was called in for an interview. From my Instagram and Internet searching, I found that the Michigan Fashion Summit was going to be a one-day conference full of 14 unique workshops that centered around topics such as styling, modeling, makeup artistry, blogging, designing and entrepreneurship. The workshops were going to be led by industry professionals including former Project Runway contestant Char Glover, lifestyle blogger Mia Ray, international accessories designer Aki Choklat, and wardrobe stylist Marv Neal. The event seemed like it was going to be one of the most inspiring fashion events the city had ever seen, and I was determined to get involved, someway, somehow.

After sending in my information, I crossed my fingers and hoped that I would get contacted back. And soon enough, I did! The next thing I knew, I was having a sit-down meeting with Michigan Fashion Week Founder & CEO Loren Hicks, and she asked me to come on as the official Fashion Summit intern! She informed me that I was going to be responsible for making sure the Michigan Fashion Week Twitter account was updated, as well as help out with any other promotional tasks that needed to get done.

The weeks leading up to the Summit were so busy to the point that things just seemed to fly by. The team and I posted non-stop on social media, held a private VIP press & media event at Pink Pump in Bloomfield, and even set up a vendor table during Drinks x Design at the Eastern Market to spread the word and to get people just as excited as we were for the big day.

Finally, April 16th arrived, and over 120 people gathered into the A. Alfred Taubman Center for Design Education on the campus of the College for Creative Studies. I was working the registration table, so I was able to see the eagerness and excitement on everyone’s faces first thing in the morning. From 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. all of the attendees were in for a treat!

The event started off with speeches from keynote speakers Aki Choklat and Char Glover. From there, guests were able to pick and choose which seminars they wanted to attend. I still continued to do various tasks throughout the first half of the day, but I was able to sneak into one workshop before lunch!

The one I went to was entitled “Active Blogger” with Mia Ray. Mia Ray is a Detroit-native that started her lifestyle blog, “Confessions of a Glam-Aholic” eight years ago. Since her debut into the blogging world, Mia has garnered much success, and has gone on to do collaborations with ESSENCE Magazine, BET Networks, eos Products, and has even worked with a few celebrities.

During her workshop, Mia talked about the steps she took to become the “lifestyle influencer” that she is today, and how us aspiring bloggers can do the same. One of the main things she said that stuck out to me was, “You have something to offer that everyone else doesn’t…and that’s YOUR voice.”

So often, we can become discouraged because we compare ourselves to others. It is important to remember that we all have our own talents and our own points of view, and that’s what makes us special. We have to trust our voices, believe in ourselves, and take risks!

The second half of the day was filled with more workshops. The event came to a close with a panel discussion featuring some of the guest speakers. Once 3:30 p.m. rolled around, the Fashion Summit had officially ended, and I was totally in awe of how everything had panned out!

So many people came up to me and told me how much fun they had, and how they couldn’t wait for next year. Seeing all of the tweets, pictures and Facebook messages about the event were so heartwarming, and it made me so proud to be able to say that I was a part of the team.

I learned so much from interning with Michigan Fashion Week, and I am beyond grateful that Loren and the rest of the team trusted me enough to help them out. I walked away with new knowledge, a positive outlook on the Metro Detroit fashion industry, and not to mention a few new contacts!

Detroit is becoming one of most innovative and stylish places in the world. I love that we can collaborate and encourage one another. And with events like the Michigan Fashion Summit and outlets like Detroit Fashion News, I think we’re definitely on the right track.
